William A.
Carter
September 16, 1935 – May 20, 2020
Dr. William A. Carter
On Wednesday, March 20, 2020, Dr. William A. Carter passed away at age 84.
William was born on September 16, 1935 in Ada, Oklahoma to George and Flora (Summers) Carter. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from East Central University and began his teaching career at Union High School. With the passage of the National Defense Act after the launch of Sputnik, he returned to school and received a Doctorate in Zoology at Oklahoma State University. After teaching on year at Northwestern Oklahoma State University he returned to the family farm in Oakman and his alma mater East Central University where he finished his professional teaching career. During his time at ECU he served as the chair of the biology department and as the pre-med advisor. He was passionate about providing the best opportunities for his students and through his counsel, guidance, and teaching left a legacy of zoologists, ornithologists, teachers, doctors, dentists and veterinarians.
William's interest in nature started at an early age. His first "bird book" was a set of cards that came as a premium in a brand of baking soda. He was an avid reader and book collector. He had a remarkable knowledge of nature and if you ever joined him on a field trip, you could not help learning something new. Birding was his favorite hobby and he traveled extensively to see new birds and enjoy the outdoors. While he was sometimes hard to get to know, those that knew him well will always remember his generous nature and willingness to help.
William was preceded in death by his father, George, and his mother, Flora. He is survived by several cousins and his adopted family of friends. Private services are pending. Should you wish to honor his memory, donations can be made to the Oklahoma Ornithological Society, ( www.okbirds.org for more information) or a scholarship foundation fund has been established with the East Central University Foundation by his former students.
