BILL NELSON
ADA-Services for William Ervin "Bill" Nelson, 96, of Ada, are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David L. Daniel will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodberry Forest Cemetery in Madill.
Mr. Nelson died Sunday, November 10, 2013 at a local nursing home. The son of a Methodist preacher/farmer, he was the second of eight children. He was born February 20, 1917 at Clarita, Oklahoma to Samuel Benton and Lillie Etna Pound Nelson. He graduated from high school and attended East Central University for a year.
He married Lillie Viola Roark on September 13, 1942 in Roswell, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on March 2, 2008 in Ardmore. Mr. Nelson, a lifelong carpenter and woodworker, also worked in several businesses including remodeling, appliance sales, and oilfield equipment sales and repair. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, and a certified Methodist lay preacher. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Ada. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Chickasaw Nation. Mr. Nelson served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II with the 9th Air Force. He landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day along with the Allied troops. He was called to serve his country again during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant. In 2008 Mr. Nelson was included in the America Honor Flight, in which veterans are honored for all their heroic sacrifices. They are transported to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Nelson of Oklahoma City; three granddaughters, Kimberly Settle of Oklahoma City, Christy Khan and her husband Obaid of Oklahoma City, and Heather Settle and her husband Adam Haile of North Carolina; his great grandchildren Josephine Haile, Hamza Khan, Sabira Khan and Danya Khan; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Betty Nelson Rennke, of Denton, TX; and sister-in-law, Lorene Norton of Davis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Viola Nelson, and a grandson, Vaughn James.
Bearers will be Stanley Nelson, Jeff Nelson, David Rennke, Adam Haile, Obaid Khan and Mike Barnes.
