WENDELL BAXTER
STRATFORD, OKLAHOMA-Services for Wendell Loyd Baxter, 85 of Stratford, OK, are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Ada Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Jim Knight will officiate. Visitation will be at the church immediately following the service. Graveside service will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the Beggs Cemetery in Beggs, Oklahoma.
Mr. Baxter died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at his daughter's home in Vancouver, Washington. He was born January 7, 1928 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Loyd and Sylvia Morton Baxter. He spent his childhood in Tulsa and Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High School in 1946. He won many awards for his athletic ability while in high school.
He married Lila Jean Hill on December 5, 1947. They were married for 65 years. Mr. Baxter graduated from Bethany Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University) in 1954, and was a pastor in El Campo, TX for two years. He and Jean made their home in Bethany, OK and Vancouver, WA before retiring in 1994. After retirement they moved back to Oklahoma where they lived in Buncombe Creek before moving near their daughter Linda in Stratford in 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Baxter, of the home; daughter, Linda Jean Pound and her husband Jack of Stratford, OK; daughter, Sherrie Baxter of Vancouver, WA; eight grandchildren, Bryan and wife Carey, Rebecca, Daniel, Michelle, Rachel, Jonathan and Melinda; a sister, Shirley Carter and husband Louis of Fisk, MO; brother, Ted Baxter and wife Mary of Tulsa, OK; and sister-in-law, Willette Baxter of Russellville, AR.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Loyd's second wife, Carmen; brothers, Bob and wife Maxine of Tulsa, OK; Macky of Tulsa, OK; Henry of Russellville, AR; and sister, Jackie Lee.
The family says those who wish may make memorials in memory of Wendell to their granddaughter's mission work in Belize. Crossroads Church of the Nazarene, 6150 Firestone Street, Ocean Springs, MS 39564, Attn: Church Treasurer Designate to Rebecca/Belize.
