SUE ASKLUND
ADA-Services for Virginia Sue Asklund, 90, of Ada, are 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. John Haynes will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Asklund died Sunday, December 2, 2012 in Oklahoma City. She was born July 29, 1922 at Emporia, Kansas to George William and Crystal Ruth Young Anderson. She attended Emporia Grade School and graduated from Emporia High School in 1940. She graduated from the College of Emporia (now Emporia State University) in 1944. She majored in Home Economics and minored in music and Mathematics.
She married Charles Frederick Asklund on December 25, 1946. She and her family moved to Ada in 1953 from Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death on July 12, 2009 in Ada. Mrs. Asklund was a High School Teacher in Osage City, Kansas and Topeka, Kansas and later, she was co-owner of Ada (Army) Men's Store in Ada from 1955 – 1970 and Harp and Asklund Department Store. Mrs. Asklund served on the Pontotoc County Election Board for 20 years. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Ada, where she taught 5th and 7th grade girls Sunday school for 12 years, and was a member of the church choir for 40 years. Mrs. Asklund was a charter member of the Fine Arts Dept. of the Tanti Study Club, where she served as General President in 1969. She was a member of the Fortnightly Study Club, Music Department, the Wednesday Morning Music Club, the Mature Melody Makers, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include a son, Dan Asklund and wife Retha of Ada; two daughters, Linda Robinett and husband Mark of Oklahoma City, and Nancy Barrington and husband Mike of Hanover, NH; her grandchildren, Mandy Bean and husband Clint, Bentonville, AR, Missy Schubert and husband Gary, Bentonville, AR, Holly Robinett, Oklahoma City, Alex Barrington, Isa Barrington, both of Hanover, NH; her great grandchildren, Ainsley Bean, Grady Bean, Hailey Schubert and Chelsey Schubert, all of Bentonville, AR; a brother, George Anderson and wife Carol, Bowie, MD; a sister, Betty Smith and husband Paul, Hutchinson, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gwendolyn and Patricia Anderson.
Bearers will be Bob Hobson, Wiley Winton, James Mouser, Bob Cantrell, Bruce Bonar and Myles Deering.
