SHORTY BARNES
ADA-Services for Virgil Leon "Shorty" Barnes, 84, Ada, are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Earl Hood will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at a Norman hospital. He was born March 25, 1926 at Scipio, Oklahoma to Walter and Virdie Heady Barnes. He lived in Ada most of his life.
He married Hazel Marie Sires on November 19, 1946 in New Jersey. She preceded him in death on September 1, 2010 in Ada. They were married for 64 years. Mr. Barnes was a butcher for Wickham's and Reeves Packing Companies in Ada and was also a baker and carpenter. Mr. Barnes served in the U. S. Army in India, Burma and China from December 11, 1945 until February 13, 1947. He served in the last U. S. Army Cavalry Unit.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Barela and husband Jim, Moore, Judy Lewis and husband Buddy, Eufaula, and Kim Warman and husband Maury Halverson, Ada; his grandchildren, Gary D. Cheek, Ashley Hunsucker, Lori Elms, Tammy Lewis, Tangi Lewis, Brandon Eidson and Brian Eidson; eleven great grandchildren; one sister, Lois Wilson of California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Virdie Barnes, his wife, Hazel Sires Barnes, brothers, Elmer, Bill and Ray, a sister Cleo, and great grandson, Eric Poindexter.
Bearers will be Tyler Lewis, Dustin Elms, Ben Hunsucker, Robert Meek, Larry Jones and Kevin Jones.
