ALLEN-Services for Verna Christine Hughes, 89, Allen, are 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Richmond Avenue Free Will Baptist Church, Rev. Buddy Drake will officiate. Burial will follow at Allen Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Allen Chapel from 3:00 p.m. Wednesday until service time.

Mrs. Hughes died Monday, December 7, 2009 at an Allen nursing home. She was born May 19, 1920 at Allen, Oklahoma to James William and Minnie Bynum McElroy. She lived in the Allen area all her life and graduated from Allen High School in 1937.

She married Kenneth Hughes on February 14, 1939. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1981. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and a member of Richmond Avenue Free Will Baptist Church since 1958.

Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Rowsey and husband Louis, Atwood, Rita Nix and husband Jimmy, Allen, Lisa Butcher and husband Steve, Holdenville, and Sandy Wofford and husband Doyne, Velma; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Hughes, Allen; fourteen grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, a daughter, Donna Kay, son, Kenny Lane, great granddaughters, Jacquelyn Kristine Crowl and Isabella Rowsey, sisters, Obie Tillery, Willa Mae Sanders and a brother, Vernon McElroy.

Bearers will be her grandsons, Jeffery Hughes, Jamey Hughes, Stephen Rowsey, Chad Nix, Steven Butcher, Jesse Wofford and Richard Laden. Honorary bearers will be members of the Richmond Avenue Free Will Baptist Church.
