VELMA BETTS
ADA-Services for Velma Horton Betts, 94, Ada, are 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Earl Hood and her great grandsons, Revs. Lucas Cane and Jarrod Newby will officiate. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Betts died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at a local nursing home. She was born January 29, 1915 to John and Mary Magdaline Swaffer Bench in Tupelo, Oklahoma.
She married William Leon Horton on April 8, 1933. He preceded her in death December 19, 1985. She later married Jess Betts, he preceded her in death on November 11, 1997. Mrs. Betts was a homemaker and volunteered for organizations with the Chickasaw Nation. She was attended the Evangelistic Temple in Ada, and was a member of the Chickasaw Cats.
Survivors include three daughters, Reva Sue Willoughby and husband Leroy, Ada, Leota Hopper and husband Terry, Ada, and Deloris Trobaugh and husband Neal, Eufaula; a son-in-law, Vernon Laxton and wife Della, Ada; a sister, Mildred Green, Ada; 17 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 24 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, twin brother, Velton Bench, brothers, Emmit, Clay and Lloyd Bench, sisters, Johnie Peyton and Oma Lee Holman, two daughters, Ruby Laxton and "Cookie" Hasball, a son, D. Leon Horton, a granddaughter, Tammy Laxton, and great grandson, Billy Hood.
Bearers will be grandsons, Leroy Laxton, "Rusty" Willoughby, Rocky Howard, Velton Howard, Ronnie Trobaugh, and Noel Don Trobaugh. Honorary bearers will be Morris Cane and Jim Bob Howard.
