VASKON WHITE
ADA-Services for Vaskon White, 88, of Ada are 2:00 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church, Rev. Jerry Wells will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Mr. White died Monday, May 27, 2013 at a local hospital. He was born April 20, 1925 in Vanoss, Oklahoma to A. H. and Mary Alice Mullins White. He was the youngest of 6 children. Vaskon attended grade school at McLish and Vanoss and graduated from Vanoss High School. His family is in the History of Vanoss as the White family with all six kid's names starting with the letter "V".
Mr. White served in the United States Navy from February 7, 1945 until being honorably discharged as a Fireman, Second Class, on November 26, 1945. He worked at Denco Bus Lines while attending East Central State College. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. He then worked at Montgomery Ward in the furniture department for 27 years. He owned and operated White Furniture for 4 years before being appointed as the Pontotoc County Treasurer from 1981 until 1992.
He married Ila Faye Jones on February 24, 1952. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2010. Mr. White was active in the Democratic Party on the local level in the Homer precinct and state level as a delegate. He was recently awarded with the Heritage medal from the Pontotoc County Democratic party for all the work and support he had given over the years. He proudly served as the Pontotoc County Treasurer and held the office of president of the regional and state levels of the County Treasurer's Association. He received the "Most Valued Democratic Elected Official" in 1985.
Mr. White was a longtime active member of Trinity Baptist Church. He believed in paying it forward by organizing the Vanoss Education Foundation and remembering where he came from by being a Charter member of the Dolberg Cemetery Association. He instilled in his family and others love of God, love of country, love your family and value an education.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Lynn White-Burris of Ada; grandson, Jeremy Alan Burris and his wife Lisa of Ada; granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Heath and her husband T. J. of Ada; great granddaughter, Bryli Nicole Heath of Ada; and great grandson, Jesse Michael Burris of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ila Faye; and his siblings, Sam, Vada, Pete, Verda and Tubby.
