Obituary for Ruby Smith Rowsey
The funeral services for Ruby Jewel Rowsey, 96 of Allen, OK will be held at
Criswell Funeral Chapel, Ada OK, 10:00 am Saturday, April 12. Burial will be in the Allen cemetery under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home. Officiating will be
Minister Mark Legg.
Ruby was born July 25, 1917 near Allen, to William Calvin Smith and Lillie Mae (England )Smith.
At the age of three years, three months her mother died and she was cared for by Grandmother Drucilla Adeline (Rogers) Smith of the home. She began school at the age of five at Baker Branch . In junior high, she went to live with Nanny and Charles F. Vaubel in West Monroe LA. She graduated second highest in her class from Allen High School in 1933-34. While living in Lubbock, TX Ruby continued her education through a business school correspondence course.
She and Ulys Grant Rowsey were married in Holdenville, Ok in May 1, 1937. After traveling four years with Ulys, who was employed with A.T.&T.Telephone Co. they bought a house in Allen on Highway One. There they raised four children.
Ruby was a faithful member of the Allen Church of Christ. Her joy was to care for older family members and the younger grandchildren. She loved to can fruits and vegetables from her garden and was a seamstress for the family. She managed the care of her family and livestock while her husband was away. Before his passing in 1987, they celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary. She took care of Ulys at home during his years with Parkinson Disease. Having suffered a major stroke in June 2006, she fought her way back to enjoy eight more years with her family. She is survived by: half sisters, Carmelita Kimbrell Ohio and Mary B. McPherson Duncan, daughters Charlotte and husband Ed Clarke, Allen, Donna Georgene and husband Darrell Phillips, Enid, sons, Byron and wife Janis Rowsey, Ada, and Roger and wife Cheryl Rowsey, Allen. Grandchildren include: Kim and Alan Jones Rush Springs, Kevin and Tama Tate, Terrell TX, Kristi and James Cook, Agra, Justin Phillips Enid, Julie and Cory Guthrie Edmond, Derek and D'Nay Rowsey Latta, Jennifer and Andy Stauffer Broken Arrow, Grant Rowsey Ada and Kaylyn Rowsey Allen, 9 great-grand children and many treasured nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were sisters Ruth Stephenson, Nellie Boren Chronister, brothers Charles F.Smith, and Walter C. Smith, stepmother Ruth Melton Smith, half sisters, Gladys Smith, Virginia Sanders, and Josephine Terry Blevins, and son-in -law Harold Tate and grandson, Kelly Tate .
Bearers will be Justin Phillips, Derek Rowsey, Grant Rowsey, Alan Jones, Cory Guthrie and Kevin Tate. Honorary bearers are Dwain Tate, Otto Harrington, Lewis Rowsey, Jay Rowsey, Bobby Johns and Bob Perkins.
