ROY JOHNSTON

LULA-Services for Roy Earl Johnston, 85, Lula, are 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Wendell Ingram will officiate. Burial will follow at Lula Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m Thursday at Criswell Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnston died Monday, January 19, 2009 in Houston, Texas. He was born December 4, 1923 at Centrahoma, Oklahoma to Paul Arthur and Mattie May Cooper Johnston. He attended school at Lula and graduated from Lula High School.

He married Marcine Elizabeth Sweat on September 11, 1947. She preceded him in death on April 3, 2007. Mr. Johnston was a longtime rancher in the Lula area, a member of the Lula Church of Christ and had been instrumental in starting the volunteer fire department at Lula and served as the first Fire Chief. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1943 until 1946 during World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, Betsy Berkemeyer and husband Don, Houston, Texas; two sons, Larry Johnston, Houston and Phillip Johnston, Tulsa; one brother, Lloyd Johnston and wife Dorothy, Oklahoma City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Nell Wofford, Lula; and two grandchildren, Katy Berkemeyer and Dillon Johnston.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon Johnston.

Bearers will be Clyde Wofford, Louis Daniel, Steve Ake, Don Anderson, Leon Norfleet, and Willie King.
