Robert Muntz

Robert Paul Muntz was born July 3, 1941, in Ada, Oklahoma to Dr. Earl Russell Muntz and Mrs. Oliva “Lindy” Muntz. He died at Kyrie Assisted Living in Ada on July 24, 2026, at 85 years old.

Rob often spoke fondly of growing up on “South Highland” in Ada, where he went to Ada Schools and attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Identifying a love for church music at a young age, Rob sang in the choir at St. Luke’s and later studied both piano and organ. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from East Central University before attending Episcopal Seminary at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) in Berkeley, California, where he became chapel organist. Nearing the completion of his studies, Rob wrote to his father and the Episcopal Bishop of Oklahoma sharing that he had chosen not to be ordained after graduating with his Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree.

Instead, Rob took a position with social services in Merced County, California, believing it would be a temporary job until he figured out something more permanent. In only a few years, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Master of Social Welfare (MSW) degree and worked for Santa Clara County, California Social Services until his retirement after nearly a 40-year career. Rob worked doing hospital social work, Child Welfare, and Adult Protective Services during this time, and also served as organist at several Episcopal churches in the Bay Area.

In 2006, Rob returned to Ada, where he enjoyed a vibrant 20-year retirement. He devoted countless hours volunteering at St. Luke’s, donated and oversaw the installation of a new organ at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hugo, cared for his beloved cats, traveled the USA by train, and maintained many friendships at home and across the country. He was very proud to have taken up organ lessons in his 70s, traveling to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Ardmore weekly for lessons with Dr. Elizabeth Harrison. Though it took him some time to adjust when he moved into assisted living in his final years, Rob eventually made it his own, finding comfort in gossip, wine drinking, and being proud to show off the pack of Winstons in his pocket.

Rob was known for his big laugh and found humor in almost all things in life. He often made comments such as, “The pipe organ seems to attract all sorts of strange characters, me being one of them,” and also talked often of a work performance evaluation where his supervisor referred to him only as “unusual.” He is remembered for his service and kindness to others and, although never ordained, often ministered to others. And no tribute to Rob would be complete without mentioning his penchant for frequent trips to the casino, where he could disappear for hours—if he was winning.

Rob was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Jane Muntz, his brother John Muntz and sister-in-law Betty Muntz, stepbrother Steve Omohundro, and nephew Wade Muntz. He is survived by his sister Beverly Muntz Ford and husband Mike; stepbrother Bruce Omohundro and wife Diane; and stepsister Ruth Ann Cross; nieces Lindy Cronkhite, Shannon Holt, Mary Havins and Molly Beall; and nephews Weston Muntz, Brandon Ford, Darrin Ford, Marshall Omohundro, and Cameron Cross; as well as many other family members and friends. Rob was very thankful to friends Carson Taylor, Kathy Taylor, and Randy Taylor and neighbors GaeVonne Martin and Connie Martin for their support during his last years, as well as Kyrie Assisted Living staff.

Memorial donations can be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter, both in Ada.

A burial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ada on Saturday, August 15th at 11:30 A.M., with arrangements under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home.
