Obituary

Richard Stevenson

Richard Dee Stevenson was born on February 5, 1953, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Jimmy Richard Stevenson and Demonell Hampton Stevenson. He passed away peacefully at his home in Ada at the age of 72. He loved his family, storytelling, sports, and had a deep appreciation for the outdoors.

Richard graduated from Latta High School in 1971 and attended East Central University for a year before going to work with his father as a welder's helper. He then became an extraordinary carpenter whose meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail were unmatched. His work was a source of pride and a legacy that reflects his talent and dedication.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He never passed up the chance to go fishing and likely would have spent every day on the water if he could. He was happiest outdoors and found comfort in nature. He loved sports almost as much as fishing. He enjoyed playing sports when he was younger, loved watching his sons play baseball, and was a devoted OU fan who also loved watching the Thunder play.

Richard was a gifted storyteller with a sharp wit. It seemed he had an endless supply of memories and experiences to share. He kept family andfriends laughing with tales of his life and adventures. His recollections captured his humor and his ability to make even ordinary moments memorable.

He cared lovingly for his mother after his father passed away and placed family at the center of his life. Though he seldom said the words "I love you," his actions made it clear. When he did say it, it was surprising and meaningful.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Demonell Stevenson. He leaves behind his sisters, Jeanie Ellis and Tammy Atwood, and his brother, Bart Stevenson. He is survived by his sons, Jimmy Childress and Chris Childress; Chris's wife, Linda; and their children, Garrett and Perry. He is also survived by his nieces, Tasha Walters and Kari Rich; his nephews, Mitch Worley and Nick Wilson; his great-nephews, Daniel Walters, Grayson Rich, and Jameson Rich; and his great-niece, Ellie Worley.

Richard missed his best friends, Terry and Nelson, in recent years and often spoke of them with love and longing. We take comfort in knowing he has reunited with them, as well as with his parents and others he cherished. Though we miss him deeply, we imagine the joy of that reunion and the stories already being shared.

Richard lived a simple life, but he will be remembered as a good man, a talented carpenter, a loyal friend, and a storyteller whose humor and heart will remain with us always.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
