PHYLLIS WINTON
ADA-Services for Phyllis Joe Winton, 73, Ada, are 10:00 a. m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church, Rev. David Gray and Dr. Rusty Fuller will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Winton died Saturday, December, 3, 2011 at her home. She was born July 26, 1938 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to William Rochelle (Bill) and Ruth Eleanor Thompson Auten. She attended schools in Francis, Miami, Shawnee and Stonewall and graduated from Stonewall High School in 1956. She graduated from East Central University in January 1960 with a degree in Business and a minor in English.
She married Joe Winton on May 28, 1959. Mrs. Winton taught Language Arts from 1960 until 1962 at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf. She was the secretary of the Deaf Teacher's Association at that time. She taught Business classes, computer and English at Sasakwa High Sschool from September 1975 until September 1995. She served as President, Vice-President and Secretary for the Sasakwa Teacher's Association, was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association for 25 years. She became a Christian in 1953 and is a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Winton, of the home; a son, Alan Winton and his wife Cissy of Byng; a daughter, LeaAnn Pettigrew and her husband Dan of Ada; her grandchildren, Andrea Joe Winton and her fiancé, Alex Saiz, Austin Pettigrew and Blake Pettigrew; two sisters, Billie Barger and Beverly Auten, both of Tulsa; a brother-in-law, Wiley Winton and his wife Carol of Ada; several nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Sherrill Walcott and Frances Thornton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ruth Auten; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eugene and Hazel Winton.
Bearers will be Bob Gray, Robert Gray, Kevin Gray, Jason Gray, Jake Todd, Jeb Todd and Tony Feezel. Honorary bearers will be her son, Alan Winton; her son-in-law, Dan Pettigrew; her granddaughter, Andi Winton and her fiancé, Alex Saiz, and grandsons, Austin Pettigrew and Blake Pettigrew.
The family says those who wish may make memorials to Trinity Baptist Church, 123 N. Mississippi, Ada, OK 74820.
