OVERTON CHEADLE

ADA-Services for Overton Martin "Buck" Cheadle, 91, Ada, are 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 21, at the Chickasaw Community Center, Rev. Claud Baltimore officiating. Burial follows at Condon Grove Cemetery east of Tishomingo. Military honors will be performed by the Chickasaw Honor Guard. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday at Criswell Funeral Home.

Mr. Cheadle died on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at his home. He was born January 6, 1919, near Milburn to Tom and Mary Ethel Helms Cheadle. He attended school at Milburn before attending Chilocco Indian School, where he graduated in 1939. He attended school at Murray State College from 1939 to 1941, then attended Oklahoma City University from 1941 until 1942, and Oklahoma Teachers College (now University of Central Oklahoma), from 1942 until 1943, where he graduated with a teaching degree. He earned a Master's Degree in guidance and counseling from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968. He was appointed to the Tribal Council of the Chickasaw Nation in 1975 and served as a Tribal Legislator from 1979 – 1986. He retired as an Indian counselor from East Central University and served on the Carl Albert Indian Hospital governing board from 1974 until his death. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1943 and was discharged in 1946. He worked for the rehabilitation of sailors wounded in action.

He married Helen Curry in 1974.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; a son, Robert Cheadle and wife Darlene, Ada; two daughters, Maryalice Gaskell and husband Douglas, Chantilly, Virginia; and Liz Nelson, Wilmar, Minnesota; two sisters, Julia Byrd, Ada; and Frances Bean, Wayland, Iowa; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bearers are member of the Chickasaw Honor Guard.
