Services for Mildred Lee Compton, 97, of Natural Bridge Station, Virginia will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel in Ada, Rev. Ray Talbott will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
Mrs. Compton passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, VA. She was born in Ravia, OK December 31, 1919 to Virgil and Mamie Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam Ray Compton, Sr.; son, Sam Ray Compton, Jr.; sisters, Audrey Moon, Bonnie Branum, Netha Sanders and Mabel Lillard; nephews, Tony Lillard, Dan Sanders; niece, Susan Wyatt; and a host of beloved pets.
Mildred graduated from East Central State College with a degree in elementary education and taught in schools throughout Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas as she traveled with her husband, a land-man for Sun Oil Company. Upon retirement in 1991, she moved to Virginia to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She served as a treasurer for Fine Arts in Rockbridge for a number of years.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Susan Wells Compton of Richmond, VA; niece, Darlene Anglin of Ada; nephews, Dewayne Moon of Stonewall, Frank Wyatt of Prague, Jim Sanders of Ada and Brad Lillard of Ada; numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and dear friends, Julie Johnson and Ned Braford who lovingly cared for her over the years.
