Services for Mickey Wayne Cowan, 72, of Ada are 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Cougar Activity Center Gymnasium. Bud Ross will officiate. Interment will follow at Velma Cemetery at Velma, OK.
Mr. Cowan passed away Saturday, October 5, 2019 at a Norman hospital. He was born June 21, 1947 at Duncan to Hugh Junior and Ethel Beatrice Jones Cowan. He graduated from Velma-Alma High School and holds three degrees from Oklahoma State University.
He married Vauda Nell Golson August 15, 1968. Mick was known as the "Voice of the Ada Cougars" for many years. He was a practicing accountant for almost 40 years and had more than 40 years of classroom and practical experience in the accounting field. Dr. Cowan was the former chair of the Accounting Department at East Central University from 1974 -2000. He was a professor of Accounting at Oklahoma Christian University from 2000 – present.
Mr. Cowan developed and taught CPE courses for groups such as the Chickasaw Nation, East Central Continuing Education, Kerr-McGee, the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Propane Dealers of Oklahoma. He has worked as an auditor for Crawford and Associates, executive director for the East Central University Foundation, Inc. He was a frequent speaker on ethics for various organizations, including the state auditor of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Society of CPAs.
Mr. Cowan was named Teacher of the Year at East Central University and served as director of the East Central Credit Union from 1978-1993. He also has been honored as Friend of Education for Ada City Schools. He is a member of the OSCPA and the Oklahoma Ethics Consortium.
Mickey was named the 2008 Christian Business Leader at Oklahoma Christian University, was sponsor of the Delta Mu Delta Honorary Business Society for 15 years, was the College of Business Chaplain, and served on numerous academic committees, such as the Graduate Council and the Academic Affairs Committee. He taught in both the undergraduate business program and the graduate business program.
Mick and Vauda are active members of Central Church of Christ in Ada, where Dr. Cowan was a frequent Sunday School Teacher.
Survivors include his wife Vauda, of the home; a son, B. J. Cowan and his wife Stephanie of Norman; three grandchildren, Katie, Jackson and Tori; a sister, Dianna Cowan of Velma; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Danny Cowan and Joe Cowan.
Bearers will be Bill Nelson, Russ Allen, Ronnie Brendle, Blake Crabtree, Blake Harrison and Walker Whitworth. Honorary bearers will be Mike Anderson, Zane Bowman, Bill Chapman, Charlie Golightly, Pat Harrison, Jerry Hazelton, Mark Kedy, Jim McDonald, Gary McBroom, Larry McBroom, Tim Hibbard and the Oklahoma Christian University Faculty Members.
The family says those who wish may make memorials to the Cougars Care or the Ada Cougars Athletics, P. O. Box 1359, Ada, OK 74821.
