MARY LOU SOUTHERLAND
GUTHRIE-Services for Mary Lou Southerland, 89, Guthrie, formerly of Ada, are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1 at Trinity Baptist Church, Dr. Rusty Fuller and Rev. David Gray will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Southerland died Monday, May 24, 2010 at a Guthrie nursing home. She was born May 16, 1921 at Ada, Oklahoma to Benjamin Franklin and Lutie Angeline Morgan Fowler. She lived in Pontotoc County all her life and attended East Central University and Southeastern University from 1965 until 1975. She graduated from the Oklahoma State Department School of Food Service and also received college credits in work classes from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, East Central, Southeastern, Eastern and Central State Universities.
Mrs. Southerland was a School Food Service Director for 37 years, serving at Pickett School, Glenwood and Byng and as a consultant for the Byng District until her retirement. She was a member of the Pickett Home Demonstration Club; Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, which honored her with the VIM (Very Important Member) Award in 2004; and Valley View Regional Hospital Auxiliary, which she served as secretary, and earned the pin for 18,000 hours of volunteer service.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Ada and had formerly been a member of Oak Avenue Baptist Church. She was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class, where she had served as Class President, Group Leader, Class Secretary, and Treasurer. She was a member of the L.R.I. Group at East Central University.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Skinner and her husband Joe, Garland, TX; a son, Richard Southerland and his wife Lynn, Guthrie, OK; grandchildren, Kimberly Skinner Casillas and Melanie Skinner Rutkoski of San Antonio, TX; Darren Skinner, Plano, TX; Leigh Ann Skinner Feagan, Dallas, TX; and James Southerland, Oklahoma City, OK; nine great grandchildren; one brother, Howard Fowler, Moreno Valley, CA; and one sister, Anna Marie Fowler, Ada, OK.
She was preceded in death by brothers Luther, Alva "Buck", Robert, Morgan and Virgil Fowler; and sisters, Ruth McPhail, Rhoda Gray, and Edna Birdson.
