ADA-Services for Leonard Basil Hamon, Y.N.C.S. USN (Retired), 82 of Ada, formerly of Choctaw are 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Ada Church of the Nazarene, Revs. Stephen Nation, Jim Knight, and Albert Nelson will officiate. A committal service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Dustin Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Mr. Hamon died Thursday, November 3, 2011 at an Ardmore Veterans Center. He was born October 13, 1929 in Hurricane, West Virginia to Otis Leroy Hamon, Sr. and Nora Mae Campbell Hamon. He attended schools in West Virginia, Okmulgee, Oklahoma and graduated from Dustin High School in 1947.
He married Mary Jo Kirkendoll on December 12, 1946 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in December of 2011. Mr. Hamon was employed in the glass factory owned by his father and later by his uncle, O. C. Hamon in Cedars, Oklahoma.
In 1952 Mr. Hamon joined the Naval Reserve in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Later, he joined the Naval Reserve Guard and served for 22 years. Much of his enlistment was spent in Austin, Texas. After 12 years in Austin, he transferred to the Naval Reserve Center in Oklahoma City. After 3 years in Oklahoma City, he transferred to Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois where he retired in 1972. He then moved back to Choctaw, Oklahoma and was a work crew supervisor during the construction of the Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City. Later he was employed with the U. S. Postal Service in Oklahoma City. He was later with a Civil Service Employee for the U. S. Navy. He was a Civil Servant for 18 years.
In 1999 he moved to Ada. He was a member of the Ada Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Mary J. Hamon, of the home; two daughters, Judy Hitsman and her husband Randy of Pottsboro, TX, and Sharon Davies and her husband Donald of Ada; a brother, Dennis Hamon of McAlester; a brother-in-law, R. C. Kirkendoll and his wife Wanda of Ridgecrest, CA; a sister-in-law, Jean Hamon of Vivian, LA; five grandchildren, Shelly Waddell, Kelly and Jason Minter, Amy and David McDaniel, Joe Allen and Mandy Hitsman, and Nicholas and Misty Davies; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Roberta Tubbs; a brother, Otis Hamon, Jr.; a nephew, Lionel Hamon; and two nieces, Jacqueline Tubbs and Rhonda Hamon; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Juanita Kirkendoll.
Bearers will be his grandsons, Joe Allen Hitsman, Nicholas Davies, Jason Minter, David McDaniel, Kyle Davies, Tyler McDaniel, Hunter McDaniel, and Jacob Waddell. Honorary bearers will be Jay Shatswell, Bob Whitaker, Fred Allen, John Smith, and Ronald Chapman.
