KATHLEEN SUTHERLAND
EDMOND-Services for Kathleen N. Sutherland, 74, Edmond, formerly of Ada, are 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Dr. Rusty Fuller will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Mrs. Sutherland died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at her home. She was born January 17, 1937 in Roff, Oklahoma to Edd and Bertha Bagwell Nabors. She attended Healdton and Ardmore schools and graduated from Ardmore High School in 1955. She attended East Central University, Southeastern University and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1960.
She married James Wallace Sutherland in 1973. Mrs. Sutherland was a teacher from 1960 until 1992, retiring after 32 years of service. She taught English, Journalism and mainly Special Education at Ardmore High School, Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Durant High School, Denison High School in Denison, TX, Littleton High School in Littleton, CO, Albuquerque High School in Albuquerque, NM, Westlake High School in Westlake, CA, Thousand Oaks High School in Thousand Oaks, CA, Oxnard High School in Oxnard, CA, and retired from Franklin Elementary in Ardmore, OK.
She was awarded the "First Special Education Teacher in Oklahoma" while teaching in Durant in 1963, she was an avid reader, an aspiring artist, and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was of the Baptist faith and attended the First Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, James Wallace Sutherland, of the home; a son, Anthony "Tony" D. Wade and his wife Kim of Ada; a daughter, Andrea D. Shanks and her husband Shannon of Edmond; a sister, Diana Lynn Nabors Smith of Tulsa; her grandchildren, Angel Dawn Wade, Ada, Kelsie Caitlin Shanks, Edmond, and Sean Conner Shanks, Edmond; her brother-in-law, Ron Sutherland and wife Audrey of Plano, TX; two nephews and their families, Eddie and Lisa Boggus, Lani Boggus and Laci Deskin, and Steve Sutherland and wife Mandy and their children, Chase and Gracie, Allen, TX; two nieces and their families, Michele Thomas, her son, Cole Ross and his children, Michael and Micyla Ross and Molly Trank and husband Rick and children Collin and Kelsey of Plano, TX; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edd and Bertha Nabors; and an infant sister, Wilma Jean Nabors.
Bearers will be Shannon Shanks, Collin Shanks, Eddy Boggus, Ron Sutherland, Steve Sutherland, and Rick Trank.
