Memorial services for Jo Ann Matthews Carpenter, 64, of Ada, are 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Scott White will officiate.
Dr. Carpenter died Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at an Oklahoma City hospital. She was born September 26, 1952 in Elmhurst, Illinois to Byron Stewart and Katryna Staunton Matthews. She graduated from Tulsa Central High School and came to this area in 1980 from Oklahoma City.
She received her Bachelor's Degree in 1973 and her Medical Doctor Degree in 1977 from the University of Oklahoma. She served her Residency in Family Medicine from 1977 until 1980. Dr. Carpenter began her private practice in 1983 until present. She also served the Carl Albert Indian Hospital from 1980-1983 as the US Public Health Service Sr. Assistant Surgeon, Valley View Regional Hospital from 1980 until presently with Mercy Hospital on the Board of Directors, local nursing home physician and hospice care physician.
Dr. Carpenter's membership and activities included the Oklahoma Medical Association, American Medical Association, Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians (Fellow) and America Board of Family Practice. She was also a member of the Valley View Regional Hospital Board from 2004-current, Care Cottage Team Member 2008-current, Medical Director, Pontotoc County Health Department, Chief of Staff, Valley View Regional Hospital 1996-1998, Board Secretary, Ada Boys and Girls Club 1990-1995, Past President of the Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians 1991-1992, Delegate from Oklahoma to the America Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates, Volunteer physician for Ada Public Schools, Latta Public Schools and Special Olympics, Charter member Soroptomist International, Ada, OK, past teacher of "Pathophysiology for Health Information Management" at East Central University, Board of Mama T's, Volunteer at Compassion Outreach, Honorary Chair for Juliette Low Leadership Society for The Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, Relay for Life, Family Health Foundation of Oklahoma Presidents Club, United Way Gold Award Leadership Circle, Chairperson for Physicians Manpower Training Commission 2001-2002, Oklahoma Physicians Resource/Research Network, Volunteers in Mission with United Methodist Church serving people in remote Coatepegue, Guatemala, Learn & Earn at East Central University Upward Bound Program, Volunteer faculty for University College of Medicine, and ECU Wesley Ministry.
She received several awards including the Ada Rotary "Community Services Volunteer" Award in 1994, Oklahoma Education Association "F.D. Moon" Award in 1991, Ada Education Association "Friend of Education" Award in 1990, Women Helping People Award in 1982, and United Way Physicians Service Hero Award and 8 th grade Cherry Pie Champion.
Dr. Carpenter was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Adult Sunday School, was an Elder at church on session, and involved with Children's Music Ministry.
Survivors include her companion, Jerald Ford; one daughter, Kimberly Ann Misamore and husband Michael of Mansfield, TX; one son, Scott Carpenter and wife Amanda Brown Carpenter of Moore, OK; four grandchildren, Camden, Colby, Parker and Travis; one sister, Karen Martin of Los Angeles, CA and a brother, Daniel Matthews of White Heath, IL.
She was preceded in death by her father, Byron Matthews; mother, Katryna Matthews; sister, Jean Matthews and one brother, Timothy Alan Matthews.
