Obituary

Janet Crawford

Services for Janet Sue Crawford, 82, of Newcastle, Oklahoma, are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Janet peacefully passed away at her home on May 26, 2026, surrounded by love as her family prayed with her.

Janet was born on November 30, 1943, in Hominy, Oklahoma, to Robert Walter Wells and Lovella Merrill Wells. She was the middle child between her older sister Judy and younger brother “Butch.” Her daddy lovingly gave her the nicknames “Sue-Babe” and “Susie Q.”

She graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City in 1961. While attending church at Bethel Baptist in Oklahoma City, she met the love of her life, Carl James “Jimmy” Crawford as they attended Sunday School together with Jimmy’s mother Lavonne Crawford was their teacher. The two were united in marriage on August 27, 1961.

While Jim served in the US Army stationed at the Nike Missile Base near St. Louis, Missouri, Janet worked for Southwestern Bell. During their time in Missouri, they welcomed their daughter, Karla Sue. After Jim completed his military service later that year, the family returned home to Oklahoma.

While living in Moore, Oklahoma, Janet devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother and volunteered at Karla’s school and also served as a 4-H leader. Later, their son, Carl James Crawford Jr., was born in Oklahoma City, and three years later, the family moved to Francis, Oklahoma, where Janet traded city life for country living and quickly learned to love it. She faithfully supported her children in 4-H, FFA, and sports activities, always cheering them on with pride and encouragement.

Janet’s true calling was ministering to children. At Cedar Grove Church near Francis, she poured her heart into Junior Church ministry, where generations of children fondly remember “Miss Janet” and her beloved “chalk talks” and Christmas plays. Her kindness and loving spirit also blessed the students and staff at Homer Elementary School, where she worked as a kindergarten aide.

Janet was overjoyed when she first became a grandmother with the birth of Kyler Prewitt, and her happiness only grew when Kodey Prewitt arrived two and a half years later. She treasured every moment spent with her grandsons, especially their trips to the movies and afternoons at the park.

After taking time away from work to care for her new grandson, Janet became a teller in the motor bank for First National/Vision Bank in Ada, Oklahoma. She dearly loved her customers and coworkers and took special pride in always balancing her drawer perfectly.

Following the passing of her husband and her retirement from the bank, Janet moved to Newcastle, Oklahoma, to be closer to her children. Even in retirement, her passion for children and teaching never slowed. She lovingly cared for preschoolers at Crosspoint Church Early Learning Center in Norman, Oklahoma. As she faithfully attended First Baptist Church in Newcastle, Oklahoma, she taught Children’s Sunday School and the children eagerly anticipated “Journal Time” with Miss Janet every week.

Among her greatest joys was helping homeschool her beloved granddaughters, Ally and Aubrey. Janet delighted in creating hands-on learning materials, activities, and special memories for them. She also adored her six great-grandchildren, Chloe, Jemma, Oak, Sutton, Remi and Quest. They will forever cherish time spent with Grandma-Great making crafts, baking cookies, and playing checkers and UNO together.

Janet held a very special place in her heart for her son-in-law, Kevin, whose kindness and devotion meant the world to her. Over the past several years, he faithfully acted as her chauffeur, taking her to appointments, running errands with her, and stopping by daily just to check on her and make sure she was doing well. She also deeply loved and appreciated her daughter-in-law, Bree, who was always there to help answer questions, offer support, and advocate for her whenever she needed it.

Above all else, Janet loved her husband and family with her whole heart. Known as Momma, Grandma, Grandma-Great, Baa-Bah, and Granny-Go, she leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love and servant-hearted faith.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents Robert Walter “Dude” Wells and Lovella “Belle” Wells; her beloved husband, Carl James “Jimmy” Crawford; her brother, Robert “Butch” Wells, and in-laws H J “Bud” Crawford and Lavonne Crawford.

She is survived by her sister, Judy Wilson; sister-in-law Mary Wells; sister-in-law Carol Ann Folsom; daughter, Karla Prewitt and husband Kevin; son, Carl James “Jimmy” Crawford Jr. and wife Briana “Bree”; grandsons, Kyler Prewitt and wife Jessie; and Kodey Prewitt and wife Elizabeth; granddaughters, Alexandria “Ally” Crawford and Aubriana “Aubrey” Crawford; and great-grandchildren, Chloe Prewitt, Jemma Prewitt, Sutton Prewitt, Remi Prewitt, Oak Prewitt, and Quest Prewitt. She also leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Janet will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and the countless children whose lives were brighter because of Miss Janet.
