Obituary

Janet Elizabeth Brown, 64 of Ada, OK passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021 of a heart attack at Mercy Hospital.  Janet was born in Denver, CO on September 24, 1956, to Donald and Betsy Brown and moving with her family in 1963, grew up in Tulsa, OK and Ada, OK.

Due to her intellectual disability, Janet spent most of her early years at McCall's Chapel School in Ada, OK.  Nevertheless, Janet strived to never let her disabilities hold her back. Through her own perseverance and support from her family, she earned her Certificate of High School Equivalency (GED) in 1985.  Her memory was on the level of a savant when it came to remembering birthdays and anniversaries of all those she loved.  She was employed at several sheltered workshops through the years. Endeavoring to live independently, and through the stewardship of her brother, Janet was able to leave McCall's in 1996 and live on her own, eventually moving into her own house.

Those who knew Janet best, knew they could always count on her for her sincere, albeit sometimes brutal, honesty.  She showered those she loved with kindness, thoughtfulness and abounding love.  She created world famous woven potholders, which were known to become some of the most coveted kitchen inhabitants of her family, as well as those lucky enough to receive as a gift or win at fundraising auctions.  Her bowling and dancing abilities were revered by many.  She enjoyed cross stitching and crocheting and adored Special Olympics, her church, her dogs, white wine, eating out, girl scout camp, and puzzles. Above all, Janet loved her family with all her heart along with her dear friend and guardian angel, Shelly. Her humor, belly laugh, astute observational skills and candor will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her brother and his wife: Doug Brown and Debbie Dorsey of Tulsa, OK. Stepmother: Inge Brown of Katonah, NY.   Nephew, his wife and child: Taylor Brown, Liz and Jack of Tulsa, OK. Stepniece, her husband and children: Whitney Rodich, Jordan, Hudson and Emma of Tulsa, OK. Devoted Dogs: Sugarplum and Elvis.

Many embraces await her in heaven from her parents as well as her faithful dogs, Rollo and Pepper, greeting her with enthusiasm.

A Celebration of Life will be held October 9, 2021; 10:30 AM at Life Community Church in Ada, OK.
