ADA-Services for James Jasper "Jap" Hammond, 94, of Ada are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Ada, Rev. Jerry Wells and Dr. Rusty Fuller will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Mr. Hammond died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in Ada, Oklahoma. He was born February 18, 1918 in Ada, Oklahoma to Chester Newton and Barbara Gertrude Keeling Hammond. He attended Colbert school and graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1936.
He married Dorothy B. McGinnis in 1942. She preceded him in death on August 27, 2005. They made their home in Ada all their lives. He was a member and Deacon at Trinity Baptist Church and was active in many departments for many years.
Jap served in the U. S. Army from 1942 until 1945 during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre, Hawaii, the Philippines and New Guinea. On returning home, he was employed as a Corrigator Operator at Brockway Glass Company for 36 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a Charter member of the Oklahoma City Bulldog Club, and member of the Bulldog Club of America. He raised, trained and showed English Bulldogs for 29 years. He finished 18 Champions and 11 were home-bred. In 2001, he was inducted into the Bulldog Club of America Breeders Hall of Fame.
Survivors include a son, David Hammond and his wife Linda of Ada; a daughter, Judy Sams and her husband Gene of Atoka; his grandchildren, Rodney Sams and wife Sonya of Madill, Heather Lin Hammond of Ada, and Michael Sams and wife Alisha of Chandler; his great grandchildren, Cheyenne Moss and husband Jarred, Mannie Hammond, Ada, Isabell Hammond, Ada, Zeke Hammond, Ada, Zach Tisdal Sams, Lilly Sams, and Addison Sams; and a great great grandson, Raiden Moss.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Hammond; a grandson, Jason Hammond; and three brothers.
Bearers will be Pete Presley, Bud Blackburn, John Mark Densmore, Rodney Sams, Michael Sams and Jarred Moss.
