LONNIE BARNES
PICKETT-Services for James "Lonnie" Barnes, 87, of Pickett are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Center Free Will Baptist Church, Revs. Earl Hood and Leroy Holman will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Mr. Barnes died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at his home. He was born December 30, 1924 at Alco, Arkansas to James Orville and Edith Marie Minick Barnes. He attended grade school in Arkansas and graduated from Stonewall High School in 1943. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from East Central University in Ada, a Master's Degree in Education from East Central University and a Master's Degree in School Administration from The University of Oklahoma. He also acquired 16 hours toward his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma and East Central University.
He married Christine Norma Jean Hoover on January 29, 1946. She preceded him in death on September 3, 1998. He later married Madeline Jackson Holman on November 27, 1999. Mr. Barnes was a teacher and Superintendent for the Vanoss School System from 1950 until 1975. He was the Principal at Pickett Center from 1975 until retiring in 1986. Mr. Barnes was a Charter Member of Center Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and the church bus/van driver. He was member of the Gideon's International and the Odd Fellows. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Battalion Sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Madeline Barnes, of the home; a son, Mark Barnes and his wife Kim of Lexington; five grandchildren, Chrischel Odell Green and husband Kent of Byars, Amy Odell Cool and husband Bryan, Ada, Melissa Barnes Allen and husband Justin, Norman, Regina Barnes Kraft and husband Kenny, Lexington, and Jacob Barnes and wife Paris, Lexington; eleven great grandchildren, Tyler Green, Dustin Bain, Ashtin Green, Phyllis Taylor Cool, Chrislyn Cool, Dylan Cool, Makenna Allen, Kaden Kraft, Kason Kraft, Krosby Kraft and Kinzi Barnes; one great great grandson, Kallin Bain; a sister, Dorothy Stewart and husband Duard, Altha, FL; step-children, Leroy Holman and wife Carolyn, Ardmore, Fred Holman and wife Christi, Melissa, TX, Donna Holman Wood and husband Lynn, Ada, Donna Price and husband Jerry, Glenpool, and Diana Golden and husband Randy, Ada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Jean Schmidt; and two brothers, Homer Barnes and Clyde Barnes.
Bearers will be Jacob Barnes, Kent Green, Bryan Cool, Kenny Kraft, Justin Allen, Lynn Wood, Fred Holman, Dustin Bain and Tyler Green.
