IRIS FAYE GAAR
ADA-Services for Iris Faye Gaar, 84, Ada, are 2:00 p.m. Friday at Oak Avenue Baptist Church, Revs. Ray Talbott and Joe Dixon will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ms. Gaar died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at a local nursing home. She was born April 17,1925 in Ada, Oklahoma to Augustus G. Gaar, Sr. and Gladys Faye Griffith Gaar. She graduated from Horace Mann High School and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Central University. She taught Vocal Music and Language Arts in the Ada schools from 1946 until her retirement in 1986. Her teaching career began in Roff for one year, before transferring to the Ada Public Schools where she taught at Glenwood, Irving and Ada Middle school for a period of forty-one years.
She was a longtime member of Oak Avenue Baptist Church and was the organist for many years. She was also a member of the Pontotoc County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a brother, Augustus G. Gaar, Jr., Stratford; sister, LaVerne R. Bates, Ada; five nephews, Ashley Gaar, Stratford, Dennis C. Bates, Amesbury, MA, Kenneth Gaar, Texas, Keith Gaar, Texas, and Byron T. Bates, Southlake, Texas; two nieces, Dr. Kathy Gaar, Florida and Dr. Karla Gaar, Texas; and a grandnephew, Brandon C. Bates, Southlake, TX.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Basil L. Gaar of Houston, TX.
