ADA-Services for Ileta Irene "Pat" Mitchell Taylor, 81, Ada, are 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Virgil Romine will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Mrs. Taylor died Friday, May 20, 2011 at a local nursing home. She was born May 14, 1930 in Ada, Oklahoma to B. and Linnie Ileta Lovett Mitchell. She attended Byng school starting in the first grade with Bertha Frank Teague as her teacher. Mrs. Teague was later her high school basketball coach. While playing Byng Basketball, she was selected as an All-State Player in a time that only one All-State team was selected from the entire state. She later was selected to receive the Jim Thorpe Players of the Century Award, representing the 1940's decade.
She attended East Central State College, where she was on the President's or Dean's Honor Roll each semester and was admitted to membership in the Alpha Chi Honor Society. After obtaining a Bachelor's Degree, she began teaching in the elementary school at Byng. After receiving a Master's Degree, she began post graduate studies in preparation to become a Speech Pathologist. She attended Central State College in Edmond (now UCO); Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.
Mrs. Taylor established the first Speech and Language Program at Byng Schools for Byng, Homer and Francis. She retired after 22 years in the Byng School System.
She married Silas Peter "Si" Taylor on August 30, 1946 at Lovelady, Oklahoma. She was a member of Central Church of Christ, the Alpha Chi Honors Society, the National Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association and the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.
Survivors include her husband Si Taylor, of the home; one son, Dr. Charles W. Taylor and his wife Susan of Jenks, OK; a daughter, Bettie Estes Rickner and her husband Bert, Yukon; her grandchildren, Whitley, Shelby and Darcy Taylor of Jenks, Trisha Estes Hutcherson and husband Eric of Moore; Laura Brashears and husband Jeremy of Enid, and David Bowman and wife Alisha of Holdenville; great grandchildren, Adam Hutcherson, and Katy and Sarah Brashears; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters, and her daughter, Linda Sue (Suzie) Moore.
Bearers will be Mike Seymour, Wib Scroggins, Buddy Kessinger, Glen Taylor, Bill Barrett, and Jimmie Taylor. Honorary bearers will be Frank Jared, Doyle Johnson, Jerry Walker, Jerry Maloy, Ed Poblete and H. A. Blackburn.
