HERBERT WHELCHEL
ADA-Services for Herbert Whelchel, 89, Ada, are 10:00 A.M. Friday at the Criswell Chapel, Rev. Don Griffin officiating. Burial follows at Pontotoc Cemtery in Pontotoc, Oklahoma.
Mr. Whelchel died on Monday, September 6, 2010, at his home. He was born November 8, 1920, in Pontotoc to Joseph Carl and James Pearl Shelton Whelchel. He graduated from school at Pontotoc and from East Central State College in Ada with a B. A. degree. He graduated from Oklahoma University with M. A. degree.
He taught for 22 years at Bridge Creek, Bromide, Pontotoc, Cox City, Oak Dale, Atwood, Loco, Bradley, Randlett, Vamoosa, Bray and retired from Pleasant Grove. He later worked in a boat factory, then worked for the City of Ada as an Animal Warden for 10 years. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
He married Barbara Harwood on December 2, 1946, in Gainesville, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; two daughters, Joan Griffin and husband Dee, Hastings, Nebraska; Jane Owens and Chip Elkins, Fittstown; two sons, James Whelchel and wife Stacy, Ada; and John Whelchel and wife Debbie, Ada; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer Griffin and husband Mat Miller, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Emily Overocker and husband Josh, Edmond; Steve Griffin and wife Mandy, Amarillo, Texas; Zack Whelchel, Ada; Mikala Whelchel, Ada; Kristi Stanberry and husband Travis, Coalgate; and Jacob Whelchel, Ada; 4 great grandchildren, Kate and Luke Miller, Ann Arbor, MI; and Claire and Ian Stanberry, Coalgate.
Bearers are Toby Sanders, Jimmy Speed, David Henderson, Scott Bottoms, James Copeland, and Chris Faulkner.
