George died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at his home. He was born March 16, 1939 in Ada, Oklahoma to George C. Alsbach, Jr. and Edith England Alsbach. He grew up in Ada, attended Westminster College in Fulton, MO and completed the requirements for his Bachelors of Science degree at East Central University in Ada. George obtained his Master's of Library Science degree from the University of Oklahoma.
George began his career as a librarian in 1966 at the Edmon Low Library, Oklahoma State University as a Government Documents Cataloger, cataloging and organizing government publications. He left Stillwater to pursue a law degree, but circumstances intervened that prevented him from attending law school. He was hired in 1974 by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, to work as the Cataloger for the Al Harris Library, a position that he held until his retirement in 2005.
He was a long-time member of the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) and was very active, even after retirement, in the Association's Technical Services Roundtable (TSRT). He served as secretary of TSRT at one time and was always an active participant in planning the Annual TSRT Workshop. He was a regular OLA Conference attendee, always enjoying the programs and the camaraderie that he shared with other librarians. At conferences, he looked forward to taking a car load of TSRT folks to lunch in his immaculate car, pointing out landmarks along the way. Although George was retired, he never lost his love of libraries, cataloging, and information retrieval. He took great pride in quoting cataloging rules from memory. His appreciation for research was highlighted by his keen sense of history in general and family genealogy in particular.
George achieved the rank of Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and participated in the Air National Guard until his retirement. He was a member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States. He enjoyed and greatly appreciated his association and experiences with the United States Air Force. In particular, he valued the friendships he made during that time.
During his high school and college years, George became an accomplished pianist. He always enjoyed the opera and took many trips to Tulsa for the Tulsa Opera. Another thrill for George was attending Shakespeare in the Park in Oklahoma City.
George actively attended the First United Methodist Church in Weatherford.
Survivors include cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George Alsbach and Edith England Alsbach and a sister Alice.
