ELWOOD WINCHESTER
STILLWATER-Services for Dr. Elwood Odie Winchester, 93, Stillwater, formerly of Ada are at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel in Ada. Rev. John Haynes will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Ada. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Dr. Winchester died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at a Stillwater nursing home. He was born May 3, 1918 in Coalton, Oklahoma to Odie Frederick and Ethel Mae Johnson Winchester. He attended grade school at Okmulgee and graduated from Okmulgee High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tulsa University and a Master's and Ed. D. from the University of Oklahoma.
He married Nannie Lee Stidham on October 2, 1948 in Norman, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death August 22, 2010. Dr. Winchester and his family moved to Ada in 1969 from Weleetka. He was a High School Band Director and was an Associate Professor at East Central University. Dr. Winchester was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ada where he was active in the church music programs. He was a member of the Ada Rotary Club for 20 years and had served in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for 3 ½ years during World War II helping construct the Alaska Highway.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Ray and her husband Joe of Stillwater; a son, Ted Winchester of Yorba Linda, CA; a grandson, Taylor Winchester and his wife Jenna of Yorba Linda, CA; a granddaughter, Sarah Winchester of New York City, NY; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, Jim Winchester and his wife Edith of Fresno, CA; a nephew Nathan; and one niece, Lydia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Carmen Moore.
Bearers will be Ronnie West, Carl Gilley, Jim Hamby, Bob Feighner, Stan Briley, Lonnie Long and Calvin Nolen.
