The family would like everyone to join them for a reception after the service in Westminster Fellowship Center.
Charlie was reunited with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 14, 2025. He was born October 9, 1942, in Stillwater, Oklahoma to G.C. Mayhue, Jr. and Mary Anne Dale Mayhue; they moved to Ada when Charlie was in elementary school. He graduated from Ada High School in 1960 and played on two State Championship football teams (1957 & 1959) and one State Runner-Up team (1958). In addition to playing in the All-State Football Game, he played in the Oil Bowl Game in Wichita Falls, TX, and the High School All-American Football Game in Hershey, PA. He continued his football career at the University of Oklahoma, where he started for the OU Freshman Team and was elected Co-Captain. After a red-shirt season from a knee injury, he was a three-year defensive starter, playing in the Orange Bowl (1963) and the Gator Bowl (1965). He credited himself for helping make Joe Namath (Alabama), Gail Sayers (Kansas), and Mike Garrett (Southern California) famous. He claimed Namath was the only quarterback to ever "beat him long" for a touchdown. After graduating from OU, he spent one year as an Assistant Football and Track Coach at Ada High School under Head Coach Craig McBroom, winning a football State Championship in 1965. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1970 and served two years as Special District Judge of Pontotoc County. He practiced law for over 50 years and was known around the area as the man to see for oil and gas issues. He took great pride in being a "small-town, country lawyer" and numerous times was named "Ada's Favorite Lawyer". He was always willing to drop everything to assist clients in solving their problems. He was an avid supporter of the Ada School District and was on the school board for over 40 years. The district's board meeting room is named in his honor, and in 2017, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Oklahoma State School Board Association. He showed his love for the Ada community through his civic leadership and contributions; playing the role of "Moman Pruitt" in Ada Historical Society's production The Past Performers, was one of his favorites. With his "bigger than life" personality and his innate ability to entertain, he could always captivate an audience. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Valley View Hospital Authority during the relocation and building of the new hospital. He will always be remembered for his willingness to serve and the positive impact he had on people's lives. His interests became his obsessions, such as making pickles, driving race cars, fishing, playing poker, and taking pictures and videos. He cherished his friendships and took advantage of every opportunity to reminisce with high-school friends and football teammates. His favorite motto of "Keep on shining brightly like you always have" is a perfect reminder of the life he lived.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Teresa Mayhue, Ada; daughter, Michelle Mayhue, Tulsa; son, Mason Mayhue and wife, Amy, Ada; daughter, Megan Sontag and husband, Ritchie, Tulsa; five grandchildren, Garrett Abney and wife, Morgan, Seguin, TX, Dalton Abney and fiancé, Abby Davies, Edmond, and Barrett Sontag, Will Sontag, and Reed Sontag, Tulsa; sister, Cathy Blackburn, Stratford; brother, Rick Mayhue and wife, Susi, Ada; sister, Toni Jean Kalan and husband, John, Dallas, TX; brother, Tommy Mayhue and wife, Cindy, Norman; sister, Teresa Scott and husband, Barry, Denton, TX; sister, Tammie Paris and husband, Kenny, Tahlequah, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
