BUD ASKLUND

ADA-Services for Charles Fredrick "Bud" Asklund, 85, Ada, are 10:00 a.m.Wednesday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. John Haynes will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Criswell Funeral Home.

Mr. Asklund died Sunday, July 12, 2009 at his home. He was born February 6, 1924 at Osage City, Kansas to Arthur Wilber and Myrtle Beatrice Granstrom Asklund. He graduated from Osage City, Kansas High School in 1941 and received a B. B. A degree in 1950 from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.

He married Virginia Sue Anderson on December 25, 1946 at Emporia, Kansas. Mr. Asklund was a manager for Dunlop Tire Store in Topeka, and a Cost Accountant at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka. He and his family moved to Ada in 1953 and he became a partner with his uncle, Ray Harp at the Ada Army Store, later the Ada Men's Store. He was the owner and operator from 1962 until 1974. He was also the co-owner of Harp and Asklund Department Store from 1955 until 1969.

Mr. Asklund was an active member of the First Baptist Church. He was the treasurer for Cub Scout Pack #88 and the Boy Scout Troop 13. He was a member of the Ada Rotary Club, where he helped with the first annual Rotary Pancake Fry, he served as the Audio Technician for the First Baptist Church for nine years and was the chairman of the Ada Retail Merchants Committee the year the Annual Sidewalk Sale was organized.

Mr. Asklund served in the U. S. Army during World War II with the 106th Infantry Division, 423rd Regiment. He spent 18 months in the European Theatre in Germany. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant.

He spent several years as the statistician of the KADA Sports Team with Keith Grimes and Jerry Spencer. He was an avid sportsman and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Sue Asklund, of the home; a son, Dan Asklund and his wife Retha, Ada; two daughters, Linda Robinett and husband Mark, Oklahoma City and Nancy Barrington and husband Mike, Barnard, Vermont; five grandchildren, Mandy Asklund Bean and husband Clint, Centerton, AR, Missy Asklund Schubert and husband Gary, Springdale, AR, Alex Barrington and Isa Barrington, Barnard, Vermont, Holly Robinett, Oklahoma City; and three great grandchildren, Ainsley Bean, Grady Bean and Hailey Schubert.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Clair Jean Spicer.

The family says those who wish may make memorials to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, for heart research, 825 NE 13th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73104-9930.

Bearers will be Bob Cantrell, Bruce Bonar, Dennis Moore, Jim Kessler, Bob Hobson and Wiley Winton.
