BERTHA MYERS
BYNG-Services for Bertha Holliday Myers, 93, Byng, are 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Criswell Chapel, Rev. Joe Dixon and Danny Myers officiating. Burial follows at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Myers died on Friday, July 4, 2008, at an Ada hospital. She was born October 19, 1915, in Wapanucka, Oklahoma, to Thomas and Susie Ellen Heard Holliday. She attended Wapanucka and Stonewall schools and received her college education at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, during the 1930's when it was a "Normal" school.
Bertha married Buford Myers on June 8, 1940. They lived most of their married life in a four room house in Byng, Oklahoma. They raised cattle and two children while Buford worked at Brockway Glass Company and Bertha took care of the home, the chickens, the garden and the children. When the children were older, Bertha was hired by Byng Schools to set up and teach the first Head Start program in the area. Later Bertha taught Kindergarten for the Byng School System.
Bertha was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Byng, Oklahoma. Before Buford's death on February 4, 1983, they were active in the Ada Hobo's Camping Club and the American Legion where she served as Treasurer and Second Vice President. After Buford's death Bertha enjoyed playing dominoes and cards with friends in Francis, Oklahoma. She was a member of the Pontotoc County Historical Society and spent many hours developing a comprehensive study of her family.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth Myers and his wife Nancy, Byng; daughter, Betty Leggiero nad her husband Bill of Jemez Springs, NM; one sister, Virgie Chris of Tupelo, OK; 6 grandchildren, Dana Kelly of Ada, OK; Bryan Kelley, of Ada, OK; Tammy Boren, Danny Morris, Jami Jackson, David Morris; great grandchildren, Michael, Kaitlyn, Kyle David, Tyler, Nikki, B. J., Presley, Staton, Nevaeh and Kacee.
