BARBARA WHELCHEL
ADA-Services for Barbara Harwood Whelchel, 90, of Ada, are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Rev. Temple Diehl will officiate. Burial will follow at the Pontotoc Cemetery.
Mrs. Whelchel died Sunday, March 16, 2014 at an Ada hospital. She was born July 28, 1923 in Ravensworth Road, Dunston, England to Bartholomew William Harwood and Margaret Graham Harwood. She came to this area from England and became a Nationalized Citizen on May 16, 1952. She attended grade school at Dunston Hill (Dunston-on-Tyne) and graduated from Blaydon High School (Blaydon-on-Tyne). She graduated from Darlington Teachers College with a Life Teaching Certificate. She received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from East Central University.
She married Herbert Carl Whelchel on December 2, 1946 in Gainesville, Texas. He preceded her in death on September 6, 2010. Mrs. Whelchel taught school for 35 years. She taught in England, and several in Oklahoma including, Bridge Creek, Bromide, Cox City, Oak Dale, Loco, Bradley, Randlett, Vamoosa, Bray, Varnum and McLish. Mrs. Whelchel was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Ada.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Griffin and husband Dee of Hastings, NE, and Jane Owens and Chip Elkins of Fittstown; two sons, James Whelchel and his wife Stacy of Ada and John Whelchel and his wife Debbie of Ada; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer and Mat Miller, Emily and Josh Overocker, Steve and Mandy Griffin, Zackary Whelchel, Mikala Whelchel, Kristi and Travis Stanberry, Jacob Whelchel and Loren Drake; and 8 great grandchildren, Kate and Luke Miller, Sam Overocker, Elizabeth Griffin, Claire, Ian and Abby Stanberry, and Hayden Drake.
Bearers will be Scott Bottoms, Ronnie Ward, David Henderson, Toby Sanders, Juhree Greenwood and Daryl Sawyer.
The family says those who wish may make memorials to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 508 W. 6 th , Ada, OK 74820.
