Obituary

A.C. (Alfred Carl) Adams passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in Cypress, Texas. Born June 12, 1932 in Holdenville, Oklahoma, A.C. was a long time resident of the Deer Creek, Edmond community until a recent move to Cypress, Texas.
Raised in the Butner community, A.C. graduated from old Butner High School in 1950. He went on to attend East Central University where he received a Bachelor of Education in 1953 and a Masters of Education in 1955. Upon graduation, he served as an elementary school teacher and principal in Altus, OK. On December 26, 1960, A.C. married Ruth Ann Canterbury.
In 1962, A.C. joined the State of Oklahoma Department of Vocational Rehabilitation as a counselor. He served in various administrative capacities with Vocational Rehabilitation until his retirement in 1994 as Director of Rehabilitative Services. During his 32 years of service to the Vocational Rehabilitation program, he received numerous awards for his service to the State of Oklahoma and the handicapped people of Oklahoma, including the Voyle Scurlock Award in 1990 and the ORA President's Award for Dedication and Loyalty in 1988. He was a life member of the National and Oklahoma Rehabilitation Associations and served on numerous regional and state advisory committees. He also served as a member of the scholarship committee for the Francis Tuttle Vocational Technical School.
An avid sports fan, he was a longtime supporter of youth sports, especially girls' softball, serving as a volunteer coach over several years. A.C. was a licensed HAM Radio operator and a member of the Edmond Amateur Radio Club, Deer Creek Kiwanis, and active with Red Cross/Salvation Army Disaster Relief Program. He also delivered meals for Edmond Mobile Meals.
A.C. was preceded in death by his father, Homer A. Adams and his mother Mable Johnston Adams. He is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Ruth Ann and their children, daughter Lisa Ann Adams Matthews and her husband Larry and daughter Carla Ruth Adams Mackey and her husband Doug. Also, two grandchildren, Samantha Ann Mackey and Adam Kapp Mackey, who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by sister Glenda Pannell and her husband John, nephew Keith Pannell and niece Lora Pannell Sladovnik and numerous cousins.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 10, at 11:00 AM at Rose Dale Cemetery in Ada, OK. A memorial service celebrating A.C.'s life will be held Monday, September 12, 2011 at 1:00 PM Southern Hills Christian Church in Edmond. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Edmond Mobile Meals, Southern Hills Christian Church Memorial Tree of Life, or a charity of your choice.
